What should I expect from early intervention?

To begin the process our staff will assist you in making a call to Nevada’s early intervention referral line. You will then let them know that you would like your child to evaluated by TMG for early Intervention services. Within the week our staff will contact you to set up an appointment for the initial evaluation.

Our staff will listen to your concerns regarding your child’s development and walk you step-by-step through the four step Early Intervention process.

    Happy childPrior to receiving services a Multidisciplinary Team will come to your home to evaluate your child across developmental domains to determine if your child is eligible for services. The following areas will be assessed: social/emotional, cognition, communication, motor, self help/adaptive. To be eligible for Early Intervention Services your child must have 50% delay in one area of development, have a 25% delay in two areas of development or have a diagnosed medical condition that has a high likelihood of associated developmental delays. An example of a 50% delay is if a child who is 24 months old has communication skills of a child who is 12 months old.

    Your input as well as our observations will help us identify your child’s strengths and any areas of concern regarding her/his growth and development. During this evaluation a Routine Based Interview (RBI) will also be completed with your input to identify tasks and/or times in a typical day that you know you’re able to meet your child’s needs regarding ongoing growth and development. Furthermore, the RBI will be used to identify tasks and/or times during a typical day that make it challenging for you to meet your child’s needs regarding her/his growth and development. If your child is found eligible an Individualized Family Services Plan will be developed to direct your child’s services.

    An IFSP is the document that guides your child’s services. The IFSP will note your child’s present levels of function across developmental domains and the developmental area/s of concern to you. It will state your child’s goals and their accompanying strategies. It will state the related services and professional/s the team decides are necessary for you and your child to achieve success.

    Services are flexible and can change as your child’s needs change. Typically, one primary service provider will work in partnership with you to address the goals listed on the IFSP. Other team members support your child and you by coming on joint visits with the primary service provider to your home. Suggestions given at these visits will help your child accomplish their goals.

    At least every 6 months, your child’s progress AND the IFSP will be reviewed by the team to ensure that the team is making progress towards the goals in your child’s IFSP. Because early intervention is for children birth to three years old, we want to prepare you for the time that your child will exit from our program. A reoccurring conversation about transitioning from Early Intervention services is had at the time the IFSP is developed and every time the IFSP is reviewed. Any obstacle or impedance to your child’s transition should be easily identified and managed as a result of this ongoing conversation.

By your child’s third birthday we hope that you and your child are well prepared for life beyond early intervention. You will be amazed at how far your child has come!

Who will provide services?

Speech SessionTMG staffs highly trained and qualified providers that include, but are not limited to, Service Coordinators, Developmental Specialists, Occupational Therapists, Physical Therapists, Speech Language Pathologists, Registered Dietitians, Audiologists, Vision Specialists and other healthcare professionals to provide your child and you with an individualized family service plan (IFSP) designed with your input and active participation as it’s cornerstone.

Description of Services
TMG provides a variety of services including:

  • Audiology – An accredited audiologist will provide comprehensive evaluation of hearing and recommendations for treatment
    Behavior Analysis- A board certified behavioral analyst will assess, develop and implement appropriate intervention for children on the autism spectrum.
  • Hearing Services – A licensed teacher of the hearing impaired will make recommendations and implement strategies to help your child communicate when hearing is limited.
  • Feeding Therapy – A licensed speech language pathologist and/or occupational therapy will helps your infants and toddlers learn skills to provide adequate nutrition and develop appropriate feeding skills.
  • Nutrition Services – A registered dietitian will help to monitor your child’s weight gain and overall nutritional status. They may also make recommendations about your child’s diet.
  • Occupational Therapy (OT) – A registered occupational therapy will evaluate, make recommendations and provide therapy services to enhance movement of upper body movement including the use of arms, hands and fingers. The OT will also provide services to help improve sensory regulation.
  • Physical Therapy (PT) – A licensed physical therapist will evaluate, make recommendations, and provide physical therapy to help your child improve his or her gross motor movements such as sitting, crawling and walking.
  • Speech Language Pathology (SLP) – A licensed speech language pathologist will evaluate, make recommendations and provide therapy to help your child learn to communicate her wants and needs.
  • Vision Services – A teacher for the visually impaired will help identify ways to enhance your child’s ability to learn information when vision is limited.

Children will receive services based on concerns that are identified through the evaluation process. As each child is different and may require different types of support, not all children will receive the same type or amount of services.

How will services be provided?

At Therapy Management Group we feel that parents are their child’s primary teacher. You know your child best and are uniquely qualified to be their most effective teacher. Parents teach their children a variety of skills throughout the daily routine. Although we may not be aware of it, every parent /child interaction is a teaching session.

Our goal at TMG is to help identify how your child learns best and train you on teaching strategies that will help you teach your child in a way that fits their learning style. During this training various professionals will model how to use suggested strategies, role play strategies during adult/adult interactions and coach you during parent child interactions. Finally we will help you identify natural learning opportunities for your child.

Where will my child receive services?

Current research recognizes that children learn best in their natural environment. Thus TMG strives to provide services within your child’s natural environment. This means that the majority of your services will occur in your home, park or other familiar environments with people, toys and activities that are familiar to you and your child.
